Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
A MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSWOMAN KAMLAGER-DOVE:
Dear Friend,
Every January, we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, where we have a chance to reflect on the profound life and legacy of Dr. King. I was glad to spend this holiday in CA 37 and fully recommit myself to finishing the work of Dr. King by fighting to make our nation one that is more just, more equitable, and more inclusive for all people.
Today marks the first deadline to fund the government, and Democrats had to save the day once again to prevent a partial government shutdown from happening.
As I have said before, short-term spending bills like a CR are no way to govern responsibly. There is too much at stake if we refuse to pass a budget deal that honors the top-line spending numbers that both Democrats and Republicans have agreed to. Instead of coming back to Congress this week to pass a responsible government funding package, Republicans chose to continue their non-stop attacks on reproductive rights. I was glad to vote no on legislation that would cause further harm to pregnant women and those who seek abortion care.

As we continue to reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., let us recommit to building an inclusive and just society for all. From expanding access to affordable healthcare to guaranteeing a world-class education for our children, we must fight to ensure America truly reflects Dr. King's dream.
GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
This week, Democrats once again saved the day to avert a costly, destructive government shutdown that would have cut off all funding for vital services including housing, energy and water, transportation, and veterans affairs programs. While I would prefer to expand funding for these programs, I was proud to vote to keep the lights on at these essential agencies that provide for our communities in need.
Time and time again, MAGA Republicans have demonstrated that they have no desire to govern for the American people. My House Democratic colleagues and I remain committed to putting people over politics to deliver for working families here in CA-37 and across the country.
ANTI ABORTION LEGISLATION
To make matters worse, House Republicans wasted our time this week with a bill they claim supports pregnant students. The reality is that this bill does nothing to enhance pregnant students' rights or provide them with the child care, housing, and nutrition support they might need to complete their education. As a member of the Democratic Women's Caucus, I know that pregnant students deserve more than these political stunts; they deserve real solutions. I voted no on this bill, and I'll keep fighting to get pregnant students – and all women – the support they need to thrive.
