Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove Statement on 50th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

LOS ANGELES– Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove released the following statement recognizing the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision protecting the constitutional right to an abortion.

“50 years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of protecting the right to an abortion and the right to privacy.

“In 1973 the Supreme Court agreed that women should have the power to make their own decisions about their bodies. Last year, in 2022, a conservative-activist Supreme Court stripped away those protections, overturning decades of precedent. In doing so, they put women across the nation at risk and took us back in time.

“Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, extreme Republicans from every corner of the country have tried to deny women full control over their bodies, lives, families, and futures. Women have been forced to travel long distances, arrange care for their children, and take extended time off from work in order to access the basic healthcare they need – care that they had just a year ago. This decision has comprised businesses that employ women and colleges and universities who accept women students. It is having a disastrous effect on the social, emotional and economic lives of Americans across this country in order to appease the vocal and punitive religiosity of a rabid minority.

“While we faced a tremendous setback with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, our fight did not start with Roe, and it will not end with Roe.

“The American people spoke loud and clearly this November, when voters showed up and showed out in support of abortion rights.

“We will continue to fight to ensure that all women, no matter who they are, where they live, or what they earn, are granted full control over their bodies and futures, without politicians using them as pawns for political points. The government must stay out of our vaginas.”
