DEA Proposes Rescheduling of Marijuana Following Kamlager-Dove Letter
LOS ANGELES, CA — On Tuesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland circulated a proposal to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III after Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) sent a letter in February calling on the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to reschedule marijuana.
“I applaud the DEA and the Department of Justice for taking this historic first step and urge the Biden Administration to swiftly implement this rule,” said Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove. “By transferring marijuana to Schedule III, the U.S. is moving towards decriminalization, removing barriers to research on medical cannabis, and increasing access to the legal marijuana market for the communities most impacted by its criminalization.”
Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove continued, “After pardoning thousands of people who were federally convicted of marijuana use or possession, President Biden continues to demonstrate his commitment to marijuana justice. To build on this progress, I call on the Administration to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances list altogether. In order to truly right the wrongs of the ‘War on Drugs’ and its disproportionate impact on Black Americans and communities of color, we must fully decriminalize marijuana and ensure equitable investment in the marijuana industry.”
