WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement after President Biden signed the GRATEFUL Act into law, which Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove introduced in the House with Congresswoman Maria Salazar (FL-27).
“I am thrilled to see President Biden sign the bipartisan Granting Recognition to Accomplished Talented Employees for Unwavering Loyalty (GRATEFUL) Act into law today as part of the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act package. This bill, which I introduced in the House, was a top legislative priority for the State Department this year. Even in the midst of unprecedented Republican dysfunction, I was able to work with my colleagues in the Senate and at the State Department as a first-term Member in my first year in office to ensure this bill was signed into law.
"The GRATEFUL Act provides visas for locally employed U.S. embassy staff to immigrate to the U.S. after a career of service to the United States. It allows us to keep our promise to these individuals who have earned and deserve the opportunity to pursue a better life for themselves and their families in the U.S. Importantly, the embassy staff who will benefit from this provision come from countries in the Global South and other hot spots, where they work in often dangerous conditions on behalf of the United States. Currently, over 2,000 people who have spent their careers serving the United States abroad are waiting for visas that will be freed up as a result of the GRATEFUL Act.
"I came to Congress to advance meaningful policy initiatives and am glad to have my first bill signed into law. I would like to thank Congresswoman Salazar and Senators Van Hollen and Tillis for their support of this critical legislation.”
