Kamlager-Dove Delivers Nearly $1M for Mentorship and Career Development Programming for Vulnerable Youth in South LA
LOS ANGELES, CA — Yesterday, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) presented a $963,000 check to the Los Angeles Urban League, which provides programming for at-risk youth, including former foster and justice-system impacted youth, in South Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Urban League is one of fifteen organizations that Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove secured a total of $12.4 million for through Fiscal Year 2024 government funding legislation.
The funding secured by Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove will support the Urban League’s Transitional‐Aged Youth Mentoring and Career Development project, which consists of three career development programs that serve almost 1,000 at-risk or high-risk youth in South Los Angeles. These three programs include: enhanced skill-set training focused on the life skills our young people need to be successful; credentialed vocational training in construction and the trades, health care, and sports and entertainment; and one-on-one mentorship. These programs will utilize protective and trauma-informed practices to connect youth to support networks. The League serves youth ages 16 to 29, regardless of their personal history or risk factors.
“The impact of a positive role model on the trajectory of a young person’s life cannot be overstated,” said Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove. “However, one in three young people will grow up without a mentor. The Los Angeles Urban League recognizes the disadvantage this has on our at-risk and high-risk youth, which is why it offers programming to connect young people with strong mentors and provide career training that matches their interests– empowering vulnerable youth to become their best selves. I look forward to seeing how this funding will help the League continue its legacy of improving economic and social outcomes for underserved communities here in Los Angeles.”
“The Los Angeles Urban League is pleased to receive the appropriations earmark funding through Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. These funds will support our programs that advance opportunities for our Transitional-Aged Youth Mentoring and Career Development. It is imperative that we support our Transitional Aged Youth through self-confidence, academic performance, social connections, and economic prosperity, while diminishing the likelihood of drug abuse, violent behavior, depression, and delinquency,” said Los Angeles Urban League President and CEO Cynthia Mitchell-Heard.

Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove presents a check for $963,000 to the Los Angeles Urban League at its State of Black LA event on Thursday.
