"Well, I’m going to leave you and go across the street to vote on the [continuing resolution], but I have to tell you – I was taught at a very young age that you should read it before you sign anything, let alone before you vote on anything, especially something this big – our short-term and long-term national fortunes depend on this CR, so we had to read it because, you know, Republicans are squirrelly and cannot be trusted. They said they would not hold an impeachment inquiry without a debate. That was not true. They said they would honor and negotiate an agreement for the NDAA. That was not true, which is why we are here today, voting. So my hope is that after reading it, it is a relatively clean CR, and if we can vote and send it…to the White House to be signed, then we can prevent a government shutdown. Republicans need to know that it was Democrats that held the line and told the truth to the American people – that [got] us here today, [so] we can avoid a government shutdown."

"We have to talk about what was almost going to happen. We were almost going to see a government shutdown, where hundreds of thousands of federal employees would be working without pay – TSA agents, folks that are inspecting your food, air traffic controllers. We were gonna see national parks not be able to open. We [were going to] see folks that work in these buildings to maintain them and protect them…working without pay, and in some instances, they would not be getting back pay. Every single thing that we do impacts the American people."
