WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) spoke with Laura Coates on SiriusXM’s P.O.T.U.S. Channel about the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, the looming government shutdown, and her resolution honoring the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. Below are excerpts from her interview.
ON IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY
“[The impeachment inquiry] is a sloppy sideshow because Republicans do not have a plan for how to run the government. They don't know what they want to do, so they just plan to a) shut the government down and then b) put on this revenge performance…to truly embarrass or try to embarrass President Biden. But there is no evidence to substantiate opening up an impeachment inquiry, and some Republicans have even said this.”
“So this is [Speaker] McCarthy being held hostage by the House Freedom Caucus, and it's the entire Republican Caucus not having a plan for this government…Republicans don't even care about the government…they are dragging us along through this theatrical performance…”
ON THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
“…I mean, we've had to deal with a number of shutdowns in the past… There were three shutdowns by the former president…So, we come back from our recess, and one of the first things we do is have a moment of silence for all of the victims from the fires in Hawaii. Well, so, you know, what Hawaii needs, it needs a complete embrace by the Federal Government to help it recover. I just had to deal with Hurricane Hilary in Los Angeles. We're dealing with floods across the country, and more and more hurricanes coming. All of those things – natural disasters require a federal embrace, a national embrace of all kinds of agencies. That can’t happen if you have a government shutdown.”
“[If you have a government shutdown]: The FDA cannot properly inspect your food…SNAP and WIC, [are] already on the chopping block by Republicans... Health and Human Services that help folks with their health care, those employees won't be able to go out. […] Plus, you're going to furlough federal workers…These are real consequences that we all are going to have to suffer if they shut down the government because they don't have a plan or a desire to keep it running.”
ON HIP-HOP RESOLUTION
“Man, yesterday was so fabulous. I was so proud to stand with a number of my colleagues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, and Tupac Shakur's little sister, ‘Set’ Shakur joined us, and she said something incredibly powerful. She said, ‘Hip-Hop is love.’ It's about loving your community, you know, even with its flaws, and talking about truth.
So I wanted to celebrate this movement that has lasted 50 years and is still going strong, a movement that has become incredibly mainstream around the globe…While we are having to face so many Republicans and… people…who want to deny Black history…I wanted to put forth a resolution that says, no, no, you know, I'm gonna celebrate truth. You know, the truth of Black communities who've been silenced for so long and have used Hip-Hop to tell their story, to tell stories that so many of us can relate to.”
