Kamlager-Dove Hosts U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa in Little Ethiopia, Los Angeles for Briefing with Ethiopian Community
WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) hosted the U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Michael Hammer, in Little Ethiopia to discuss current events in Ethiopia and U.S. policy toward the region, as well as to answer questions from members of the Ethiopian community:
“The 37th Congressional District is home to a vibrant African diaspora, and I was glad to host this event to engage with the Ethiopian community and bring to life my work on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa. Africa is one of the most strategically important regions in the world, and active U.S. engagement with the continent is necessary to tackle the pressing global challenges of our day. I appreciate Ambassador Michael Hammer visiting our district and taking the time to hear from my Ethiopian constituents. The African diaspora community is a critical asset and resource for improving U.S.-Africa relations, and I will always aim to uplift their voice through my foreign affairs work in Congress.
“On the Africa Subcommittee, I play a role in conducting oversight and shaping U.S. foreign policy on the African continent. I’m dedicated to ensuring that the U.S. is a reliable partner to African nations. I’ve been a big supporter of PEPFAR, I advocated for the quick renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, and, last year, I was proud to introduce the Young African Leaders Initiative Act, which would make permanent a State Department program that brings young leaders from all over the continent to the U.S. for educational exchanges and professional development training. Lastly, I led a letter asking Congress to continue its bipartisan tradition of funding food security assistance in the next reauthorization of the Farm Bill, something that continues to disproportionately benefit African countries.
“I thank those who showed up for this important dialogue, and hope to continue hosting events like this in our district in the future.”
