Kamlager-Dove, Kim Represent U.S. Congress at P20 Meeting of Women Parliamentarians
LOS ANGELES, CA – U.S. Congresswomen Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) and Young Kim (CA-40) represented the United States Congress at the Parliament (P20) 1st Meeting of Women Parliamentarians in Maceió, Brazil from July 1-2, 2024, as the designees of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04).
Reps. Kamlager-Dove and Kim both serve on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Rep. Kamlager-Dove serves on the Subcommittees on Africa and on the Western Hemisphere. Rep. Kim is Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific and serves on the Subcommittee on Africa.
Rep. Kamlager-Dove spoke at a working session titled, “Promoting Climate Justice and Sustainable Development for Women and Girls,” and Rep. Kim spoke at a working session titled, “Women in Power: Increasing Female Participation in Decision-making Spaces.”
The Congresswomen had bilateral meetings with representatives from Brazil, Paraguay, South Korea, Mexico, United Kingdom, Indonesia, and India.
“It was an honor to represent the U.S. Congress at the P20 Meeting of Women Parliamentarians alongside a fellow Californian, Congresswoman Young Kim,” said Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove. “At a time when isolationism is on the rise at home and abroad, it is refreshing to hold robust conversations with trailblazing women legislators from across the world on global issues such as climate change. Only together, with women at the decision-making table, can we address this global challenge. After this convening, I feel hopeful we can rise to the occasion.”
“Having women at the table is the world’s gain,” said Congresswoman Kim. “I was honored to represent the U.S. Congress at the P20 Meeting of Women Parliamentarians and am hopeful our meetings will lead to closer working relationships and more seats at the table for women and girls around the world. While we sit on opposite sides of the political aisle, Rep. Kamlager-Dove is a friend, and I am proud to join her in using our bipartisan voices to amplify the voices of women and girls around the world who deserve to be heard. Uplifting women is not a partisan issue – it’s a global fight that is just getting started.”
