Kamlager-Dove Statement on Anniversary of Landmark Roe v. Wade Ruling

January 25, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement as this week marked the 51st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling:

“51 years ago this week, a woman’s freedom to choose became the law of the land. For nearly 50 years, women across the country were able to access safe, effective reproductive care without restrictions or fear of criminalization. Now, just two short years after the Supreme Court’s catastrophic, corrupt Dobbs ruling, 25 million women nationwide must contend with restrictions or bans when they seek abortion care.

“Across 25 states, women’s bodily autonomy has been under attack, disproportionately impacting millions of Black women and women of color. House Republicans have used their majority to take advantage of the opportunity Dobbs created – introducing and advancing legislation in the House that will further erode women’s freedom in our democracy. Despite their attempts, people around the country continue to take a stand against the attacks on women’s reproductive rights. In six states with abortion directly on the ballot—including California—Americans voted to protect and expand abortion access.

“As a proud member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, I remain committed to keeping abortion safe and legal in California and combating attacks on reproductive care across the country. I have co-sponsored legislation that would protect the right to travel between states to access an abortion, require federal health care programs to cover abortion services, and call on the FDA to keep abortion pills like Mifepristone approved in light of recent attempts to outlaw these drugs. I have also been a strong advocate for the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would fully restore the protections women had under Roe. Like the millions who have voiced their support for reproductive rights in voting booths and on the streets, I will fight to reinstate this fundamental freedom for all women in America.”
