Kamlager-Dove Statement Celebrating Eyvin Hernandez Resolution Markup Vote

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement after her resolution calling for Eyvin Hernandez’s release passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee during markup with bipartisan support:

“Eyvin Hernandez has been wrongfully detained in Venezuela for over a year, and every day that passes without him is pain that his family and friends should have never had to endure. Eyvin may not be a household name, but he is one of our own — an LA County public defender, an angel from the City of Angels, and a son of this country.

“As his Representative, I am dedicated to Eyvin’s case and will continue working to secure his freedom, so he can return to his loved ones. To call attention to Eyvin’s unjust detention and emphasize that his release is a Congressional priority, I introduced a bipartisan resolution with Congresswoman Young Kim, Congressman Joaquin Castro, and Congresswoman Nanette Barragán asking the Biden Administration to use all the tools at their disposal to secure his immediate release. 

“Eyvin represents the best of our District. He has touched countless lives through his work as a public defender, mentor to aspiring law students, advocate for juvenile justice, and role in his local union. Eyvin Hernandez has spent his whole career fighting for the most vulnerable, and it is time that we now fight for him.

“I was glad my resolution was reported out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which is a critical step forward as we work to bring this resolution to a vote on the House Floor. I thank Chairman Michael McCaul and Ranking Member Gregory Meeks for their support in marking up the resolution just two weeks after it was first introduced, and for joining me in our effort to bring Eyvin home.”
