WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement in celebration of Hip-Hop Day and the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop:

“Fifty years ago today, Hip-Hop was born out of the Bronx in 1973 when Clive ‘DJ Kool Herc’ and his sister Cindy Campbell threw a ‘Back to School Jam.’ The blend of jazz, gospel, and blues became a unique genre and a one-of-a-kind part of the American soundtrack. As a child of Hip-Hop, I have seen how Hip-Hop has become ingrained in  American culture through music, art, fashion, and film. I have also seen it become an economic machine, ensuring that so many artists, entertainers, and enthusiasts could build careers around the music they cherish. I am glad to celebrate Hip-Hop’s golden anniversary.

“The city of Los Angeles is vibrant and full of Hip-Hop influence. California’s own talent like the late Tupac, Nipsey Hussle, and Dr. Dre are just some of the many artists who made a profound difference in the Hip-Hop industry. I recently introduced a resolution with the support of Democratic Leader Jeffries and other Democratic colleagues to recognize the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop and call on government officials to find ways to form partnerships with Hip-Hop entities to further support the Hip-Hop movement and the development of young musical artists.

“The Black community has used Hip-Hop as a tool of resistance and storytelling for decades. It allowed individuals to speak truth to the ways they have been marginalized and forgotten, becoming the voice of the struggle against systemic oppression. At a time when people in power seek to erase us, demonize us, or call us out of our name, this celebration of Hip-Hop invites unity into our lives and strengthens our resolve to push back against hatred and bigotry. On this milestone anniversary, I reflect on the role Hip-Hop has played in my life and the lives of so many and look forward to continued partnerships with those who celebrate musical artistry and individual expression.”
