Kamlager-Dove Statement on Government Funding Legislation

December 20, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement after voting ‘yes’ to keep the government open:

"Once again, Democrats had to rescue Speaker Johnson and his dysfunctional Republican Majority from their own ineptitude. Today marked the fifth time Democrats swooped in to save the day and keep the government open this Congress alone. Yet, we had to do so begrudgingly–this was not our original deal.

"A bipartisan group of lawmakers reached an imperfect but fair agreement to fund the government and rebuild communities, and we were prepared to vote on it. Then, in the blink of a tweet, the deal was dead. President-elect Musk’s tantrum tanked the bipartisan bill while Vice President Trump’s arbitrary demand for a debt-ceiling increase just pushed us closer to a government shutdown.

"I am here to do what’s best for my constituents, plain and simple. That means keeping vital services running and ensuring federal workers–including our service members–get their paychecks, especially during the holiday season. That means providing disaster relief to those in need and supporting our farmers who keep our country fed. That’s why I voted yes on today’s government funding bill.

"But make no mistake: this is just the beginning. The original, bipartisan Continuing Resolution would have lowered prescription drug costs, strengthened workforce development programs, funded childhood cancer research, and more. These provisions should have been passed, and I will keep fighting to ensure they reach the finish line. Further, I will continue combating the outsized influence of rogue billionaires like Elon Musk and exposing the gross incompetence of the House Republican Majority. This can never happen again."
