Kamlager-Dove Statement on House Republicans' Failed Israel Security Supplemental
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement on her 'no' vote on H.R. 7217, House Republicans' failed, cynical ploy to weaponize the needs of our allies in favor of their extreme, partisan agenda:
“Yesterday, I joined my Democratic colleagues in voting 'no' against House Republicans’ failed, bad-faith attempt to once again weaponize the needs of our allies to advance their partisan political agenda. Republicans introduced a standalone Israel bill that included zero dollars for humanitarian aid, zero dollars in aid to Ukraine, and zero dollars in aid to the Indo-Pacific. In a bait and switch, Speaker Johnson tried to get away with bypassing a bipartisan effort to support Ukraine’s defense, provide desperately needed humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people, and reform the dysfunctional immigration system—and he failed. This bill was a poor attempt to kill the bipartisan Senate national security package and will only further delay aid to Israel. What's more, because of the Speaker's political ploy, the President has made clear that he would veto this disingenuous bill.
"It is important to be clear that Israel’s security is interconnected with Ukraine’s security and humanitarian aid for Palestinians. Failing to pass funding for Ukraine will empower Russia, which would in turn embolden its collaborator Iran in its attempts to destabilize Israel and other partners in the region. Failing to pass lifesaving humanitarian aid for Palestinians will only leave Israel more isolated in the international community. More importantly, it is a moral imperative given the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. I reject Republicans’ attempt to play politics with the security of our allies, the lives of Palestinian civilians, and our own national security.”
