Kamlager-Dove Statement on H.R. 7024
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement on H.R. 7024:
“I voted against H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. As someone who has built a legacy fighting against injustice and advocating for equitable opportunities for Angeleno children and families, this legislation falls remarkably short.
“At a time when people in Los Angeles are struggling to afford the rising cost of living, I am outraged by the provisions in the bill that will give massive tax giveaways to billionaires and major corporations. Child poverty is the highest it’s ever been. We had a real opportunity yesterday to address this preventable poverty and show everyday Americans that their economy is working for them, not against them. Instead, this bill exacerbates socioeconomic disparities that create even further distance between the rich and poor. The real winners here are House Republicans, who were able to build off their 2017 Tax Scam legislation – the single most devastating economic policy that has been passed under a Republican Majority.
“Though I applaud my Democratic colleagues for working tirelessly to improve the low-income housing tax credit and restore the American Rescue Plan’s expanded Child Tax Credit in this bill, Republicans only accepted a modest increase to the latter that didn’t go nearly as far as the original enhancement did. Before my time in public office, I built a career on advocating for the wellbeing of children and anti-poverty initiatives. I know first-hand the type of substantial investments we need to make so that our most vulnerable families have a shot at economic security. It is shameful that Republicans chose their super-rich friends who never pay their fair share over the poorest Americans who continue to be deliberately penalized simply for being poor. We have a moral obligation to fight poverty with robust, comprehensive, and equitable economic measures. Unfortunately, this bill doesn’t even scratch the surface of what Americans deserve.”
