Kamlager-Dove Statement on H.R. 8038
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement on her vote on H.R. 8038, the 21st Century Peace Through Security Act:
"Once again, House Republicans inserted a poison pill into what should've been reasonable national security legislation in order to advance their extreme political agenda and infringe on Americans' freedoms," said Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove. "While I previously supported provisions included in the 21st Century Peace Through Security Act, I specifically voted no on this legislation because it included H.R. 7521–legislation that would essentially result in the ban of TikTok. I represent a vibrant and diverse community of creators, artists, gamers, and businesses in South Los Angeles, many of whom rely on apps like TikTok for economic mobility and stability. As such, I have been vocal about my concerns surrounding this legislation, which include the violation of First Amendment rights, expansion of the Executive branch's ability to ban tech companies with zero Congressional oversight, and this approach being an insufficient band-aid solution to the much larger national security concerns that apps like TikTok raise."
