WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove released the following statement in celebration of National Native American Heritage Month:

“During Native American Heritage Month, we recognize the importance of our Indigenous population while also recognizing how we have often fallen short on our historic obligations to support Indigenous communities. For too long, we have ignored the pressure placed on Native Americans to assimilate to different ways of life instead of investing in and appreciating their own cultural traditions.

“I’m proud to serve an active Indigenous diaspora in CA-37, whose storied contributions to our District are etched in every industry, from arts to entertainment to fashion.

“This month I hope we recommit to doing more for Indigenous people, centering self-determination, Tribal sovereignty, and self-government in our discussions as we work to address their needs. As Vice Ranking Member of the Committee on Natural Resources, Tribal issues are front and center in my work in Congress, and I have worked to support the Indigenous community through the several pieces of legislation.

“While there is still more work to be done to ensure equal access to resources and address our nation’s history of colonialism against Indigenous people, I will always champion Tribal issues from land use to equal opportunity and beyond. To my constituents in CA-37 and across the nation, I hope this month is full of light and love amongst your family, friends, and community members.”
