WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement on the passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein:
"Senator Dianne Feinstein’s loss is one that is being felt deeply across California today. Her legacy championing justice, equality, and human rights, both in California politics and as the longest-serving Senator from our state, has made an indelible mark on our country.
“Her trajectory to the Senate started under tragic circumstances after the fatal shooting of Harvey Milk. With grit and grace, she spent years shattering glass ceilings and breaking barriers for so many women to follow. As Chairwoman of the Intelligence Committee and the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, she spent her tenure standing up to the NRA and advocating for stronger gun control laws, eventually helping secure enactment of the historic 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban. With a record of working across party lines to get things done, she was instrumental in ushering forward major policies from the Affordable Care Act to marriage equality and the Violence Against Women Act. A powerhouse in Washington, D.C., her passion for human rights contributed to the landmark release of the 2014 Senate Intelligence Committee report on CIA torture, which forced our country to be held accountable to our wrongdoings and challenged each of us to do better.
“She was here until the end, with her last vote in the Senate just yesterday morning. Her commitment to Californians was demonstrated by her three decades in public service. We will miss her as a Member of the California Delegation but will always remember her stature and honor her legacy in our state.”
