WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) issued the following statement praising President Biden and Vice President Harris for creating the historic new Office of Gun Violence Prevention:
"Earlier this year I was glad to cosponsor legislation urging the White House to create the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Last week's historic effort from the President to make this office a reality is a major step forward in our work to curb the deadly epidemic of gun violence.
“Over 31,000 lives have been stolen by the hands of gun violence, with over 500 mass shootings taking place just this year alone. Too many people are retraumatized by the reoccurring act of gun violence across our country. In my District, I have heard just how horrific and painful this epidemic has been for some CA-37 families.
“The Office of Gun Violence Prevention not only addresses the call to action that so many victims, survivors, and activists have championed, but will also help implement and build on the Administration’s work to save lives. From key executive orders to the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, this office is another meaningful action taken by President Biden and Vice President Harris to address gun violence.
“Everyone’s child is worth a life, and our children deserve to grow up in a country without the fear of violence lurking around every corner. As a member of the Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention, I will continue to champion gun violence prevention policies like the Assault Weapons Ban and other important legislation around red flag laws and safe firearms storage to ensure everyone has the chance to live safely. We must push back on the inflammatory rhetoric and culture of hate and violence that has led to the troubling rise in gun violence and do something to prevent our communities from becoming war zones."
