Kamlager-Dove Statement on President Biden’s Commutation of Nearly All Federal Death Row Inmates
LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement on President Biden’s decision to commute sentences for 37 individuals on federal death row:
"Our justice system is often unjust and inequitable, where due process and fairness tends to favor those with the skin color, bank account, and privilege to demand access to an impartial trial. Yet, change is happening—the system is beginning to recognize that long periods of incarceration do not equate to rehabilitation, just more punishment without purpose. Still, too many individuals serve sentences vastly disproportionate to those delivered for the same offenses today.
"These unjustly harsh sentences not only fail to enhance public safety, but they also impose a heavy financial burden on taxpayers. The focus of extreme penalties has shifted away from rehabilitation and toward endurance of suffering, while court proceedings for lengthy sentences become procedural and costly—up to $200,000 each time—without producing meaningful outcomes.
“I applaud President Biden for exercising his authority and fulfilling his responsibility to grant these commutations. These actions transcend partisan lines and reflect a deep commitment to justice and human dignity. During this holiday season, they serve as a powerful reminder of the capacity for redemption—a principle that we all deserve. Thankfully, we have a President who understands and upholds this ideal.”
